Growth dynamics of faceted Al13Fe4 intermetallic revealed by high-speed synchrotron X-ray quantification

• Solidification of Al-5wt%Fe alloys was monitored via high-speed synchrotron tomography. Formation dynamics Al 13 Fe 4 intermetallics were revealed. Hole-like defects filled with aluminium melt observed within the intermetallics. Oriented particle attachment as a potential growth hypothesis proposed. High-speed tomography used to investigate nucleation and intermetallic during solidification an alloy, providing new insights into its formation process. The majority nucleated near surface oxide specimen few at phase. crystals grew variety shapes, including plate-like, hexagonal tabular, stair-like V-shaped, which can be attributed crystal structure this compound susceptibility twinning. mechanism proposed explain intermetallic, needs further experiments simulation confirm.
